Founded in 1996\, Red Wiggler first dug into the soil on a 2.5-acre farm in Comus\, Maryland. The idea came to Woody after working in group homes in Arizona. Through this experience\, Woody saw the need for both healthier food and more meaningful jobs for adults with developmental disabilities. The idea evolved from gardens and composting services to a full-fledged organic vegetable farm employing adults with developmental disabilities (Growers) who grow food for the community. Through a partnership with the Arc Montgomery County\, Woody spent that first season working and learning how to farm alongside five Growers\, growing food for a 12-member Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and two farmer’s markets.

Emma writes: \n“Hello! I’m Emma Jagoz and I’m a first generation farmer who founded Moon Valley Farm in 2012. I am passionate about taking action locally to tackle global social and environmental injustices. I see the broken food system with its abundance of unhealthy\, highly processed food as one of the most dire issues facing our society\, as it’s destroying the environment\, it’s reliant on appalling work conditions and it creates a myriad of health issues to those who consume its products. \nI believe that by stewarding land responsibly through regenerative agriculture\, we will LOCALIZE our food system and also improve our waterways\, the health of the Chesapeake Bay\, and decrease the need to rely on fossil fuels and shipping logistics to get food. I think that the community that forms around this new local food system will have the tools needed to strengthen the health of our families through food AND will be empowered to successfully navigate the increasingly uncertain world affected by climate change disasters. \nOn the farm\, our mission is to unite ALL people around our common denominator\, the need to eat—by providing access to reliable\, healthy\, responsibly-grown and fresh food that combats our pandemic of health issues\, reliance on pharmaceuticals\, and a food industry that is destroying our planet. We are also passionate about providing our community with meaningful employment and improving the soil surrounding our region’s most important resource\, the Chesapeake Bay. \nOutside of the farm\, I am a mother of two amazing kids ages 12 & 11\, have two dogs and two cats\, and I am constantly working to better my work-life balance to focus on more quality time with my incredible family.”

She was inspired to found the Umbrella Project after seeing how much daughter Eliane’s Appalachian Trail thru-hike in 2016 helped in her grieving and healing process. \nPatricia is a long-time communications and meetings professional\, editor\, and journalist\, primarily in the aviation\, travel and environmental sectors. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post\, The New York Times\, Frederick Magazine and numerous other publications. In 2009\, Aje was arrested and faced a twenty year prison sentence; with all but eight years suspended\, over a major drug distribution charge. While incarcerated\, Aje realized he no longer had control over his life and admitted to himself that life had become unmanageable. Through the pain\, the hurt he caused his family\, and the loneliness he faced behind bars\, Aje decided to do one of the hardest things in life; change. He decided to no longer be a menace to society and with strong family support\, love of God\, and many support groups; Aje opened a new chapter to his life and never looked back. \nAje passionately works to deter the youth of today from the same situations and consequences he once faced. Using his personal\nexperiences\, Aje is able to expose the youth to the dangers associated with certain actions and the path those choices will take them on. It is his and the mission of I Believe In Me to inspire and challenge youth through physical and mental activities that foster self -respect and respect for the world around them.

SUMMARY:Food for Thought and Board of Directors Meeting; Everyone Welcome! [Online; Free; RSVP]
DESCRIPTION:Your co-op’s Board of Directors will meet virtually on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.  Please RSVP here by noon on that Thursday to receive your Zoom link.  Your Zoom link will be emailed to you on the day of the meeting. \nEarly in the meeting agenda\, the board reserves space to hear from owners who wish to address the board.  Want to contribute to our next Board meeting?  Click here and in the subject line put “Owner Comment” and let your voice be heard! \nThis meeting will start with our “Food for Thought” speaker series presentation!   These 20-minute Ted Talk style speeches will take place at the beginning of each board meeting and highlight presenters from diverse and marginalized groups within the Frederick community.  Our hope is to center different voices in order to learn about the joys\, struggles\, and experiences within Frederick and emphasizes our co-op principles of education and concern for community.  Due to limited meeting time\, there will be no Q&A but contact information and resources will be shared for follow up conversations. \nThis month’s Food for Thought presenter is Michael Hughes\, Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer for the Frederick County Government! Long before what has now become “fashionable\,” Michael Hughes\, Frederick County’s first Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer\, was instituting racial and social justice initiatives at several large community serving institutions\, committing decades toward advancing equity and creating welcoming workplaces and communities. \nMichael joined the Frederick County government in November 2020 as a credentialed diversity trainer who is certified in Diversity and Intercultural Competence from Wake Forest University\, and is certified as a civil rights investigator. He has designed professional development courses for conferences\, colleges\, corporations\, and community serving agencies. \nHis work in advancing social justice is not limited to racial equity training. During his 25 years of progressive advancement in higher education\, Michael led Title IX policy design and program launches for multiple colleges to identify and remedy inequities around gender & gender identity; Led a cross-functional team in producing the 5-year web accessibility plan to make campus accessible to faculty and students that are differently abled; Designed and implemented a Restorative Justice model for student conduct efforts for a college that adjudicated over 500 student conduct cases each year.  He has Chaired Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Committees at multiple institutions\, provided the services of an Ombudsperson\, and conducted numerous investigations of complaints of discrimination. \nWhile focusing efforts upon the critical work of creating and leading institutional and systemic change\, Michael expresses that he never wants to forget the real reason for pursuing diversity\, equity\, and inclusion.  He maintains that the simple truth learned in his theological training to “Love people\, and love the God who made them” keeps him grounded and connected to the “why” that drive his efforts as the County’s Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer. \nUpon accepting the enormous responsibility for advancing diversity\, equity\, and inclusion throughout the County\, Michael immediately began identifying and partnering with those that had been doing the work in the County\, long before he relocated here from North Carolina this past November.  These included leaders from community service and support agencies and the faith community; minority business owners; Frederick County Public School leaders & Higher Education administrators\, and others. \nMichael expresses his gratitude to have the opportunity to participate in this speaker series\, and looks forward to future opportunities for partnership in the work of making Frederick County a more diverse\, inclusive and welcoming community for all.
