SUMMARY:Intro to Cyanotypes: Historical Photographic Process
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will be introduced to cyanotype\, a historical alternative photography process popularized by 19th century botanist Anna Atkins. Attendees will gain an understanding of the historical photographic process\, make an artistic composition and walk away with three unique works of art! Produce and flowers from Common Market\, that would otherwise be discarded\, will be used as subject matter. Participants are also encouraged to bring in their own repurposed or collected items. \nJillian Abir MacMaster is a photographic artist from Frederick\, MD. She recently completed an artist residency at Fox Haven Farm in Jefferson\, MD\, where she created cyanotype prints about and using the farm’s herb garden. She had the solo exhibition With Teeth at the Delaplaine Arts Center in 2022. She curated the exhibition Infinite Growth at the Frederick Arts Council in 2022\, which exhibited the work of LGBTQ+ artists from Frederick and beyond.

SUMMARY:Eating for Longevity: How to Cook the Blue Zones Way [Part Two] (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Want to live to 100? Certain communities around the world\, dubbed Blue Zones by Dan Buettner at National Geographic\, may have the key. The largest populations of centenarians live in Sardinia\, Italy; Okinawa\, Japan; Nicoya\, Costa Rica; Ikaria\, Greece; and Loma Linda\, California\, and their longevity seems to be tied to a variety of common healthy behaviors\, including (if not especially) how they eat\, which is a mostly plant-based diet. In this 5-week cooking demonstration series\, led by culinary coach Alison Wexler\, you will learn about a different Blue Zone each week and how to cook plant-based dishes from that region. \nThe second part of this series\, on the 25th\, focuses on Okinawa. Okinawan cuisine is a mix of Chinese\, Southeast Asian\, and Japanese cooking styles\, paired with nutrient-dense vegetable foods like sweet potatoes and tofu. Come prepared to volunteer as Alison makes Veggie Champuru and Sweet Potato and Onion Hash from The Blue Zones Kitchen cookbook. Samples will be served. \nOptional pre-reading and/or viewing for this series \n\nDan Buettner\, The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest\, 2d ed. National Geographic\, 2012.\nDan Buettner\, The Blue Zones Kitchen. National Geographic\, 2019.\n“Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones\,” 4 episodes on Netflix\, 2023.

SUMMARY:Eating for Longevity: How to Cook the Blue Zones Way [Part Four] (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Want to live to 100? \nThe fourth part of this series\, on February 8th\, focuses on Ikaria. Here we find a nuanced version of the tried-and-true Mediterranean diet\, that is heavy on olive oil\, as well as legumes and greens. Come prepared to volunteer as Alison makes Chickpea Soup with Lemon and Herbs and Winter Potato Salad from The Blue Zones Kitchen cookbook.
