SUMMARY:Wishing Wells And Blue Bin Dreams: The big issue of “Wishcycling”
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, we will explore the common misconception of wishcycling\, the economics that drives recycling choices\, and how to avoid traps\, greenwashing marketing\, and our own misconceptions to recycle with more purpose. Attendees will gain the understanding of how Frederick County operates within the economics of recycling in addition to learning about how to make better choices for their recycling! \nPaul Varga is the Communications Manager for the Division of Solid Waste and Recycling. One of his biggest pet peeves is the inconsistent messaging behind recycling\, and he wants to help by using his day-to-day knowledge of Frederick County’s robust recycling program. \n***If you RSVP but cannot make it\, please contact aharmon@commonmarket.coop so we can make more spots available.***

SUMMARY:"Detox Your House Cleaning Products" and All-Purpose Cleaner Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Studies show that what we use to clean our homes is just as important as what we put in and on our bodies. When we use toxic products to clean our homes\, they will make their way into our bodies eventually. Indoor air quality can be up to 5 times more polluted than the air outside and much of that is due to the toxins that we use in our homes. \nThe good news is that we can still effectively clean using simple\, easy-to-find ingredients without the toxic chemicals; and yes\, we can still disinfect as well! Join us for an informational session and hands-on workshop on the steps you can take to detox your house cleaning products and make your very own all-purpose cleaner to take home with you to get you started.

SUMMARY:Eating for Health & the Planet | Making the Switch to a Climate-Friendly Diet [FREE]
DESCRIPTION:Studies show that just by eating more plant foods and fewer animal products each of us has the power to make a big difference for the climate and for our health. If you have been thinking about switching to a more plant-based diet\, but aren’t sure how\, join us for this fun and informative talk by Alison Wexler\, a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC)\, culinary coach\, and Frederick County Food Council Steering Committee member. \nAlison will be giving an introduction to different plant-based diets and how they support the climate\, as well as your body. You will learn the facts about protein needs and how to use plant protein sources. She’ll review common ingredients\, cooking tools\, and recipe sources used in plant-based cooking\, and provide strategies and helpful tips for both integrating more plant foods into your diet or making the switch to purely plant-based. Along the way\, Alison will also give some information on how to source your food locally in Frederick County. When your food doesn’t travel far from the farm to your table\, it tastes better\, has higher nutritional content\, and cuts down on emissions. \nSponsored by: MACS Multi-faith Alliance of Climate Stewards \n**Due to limited space please RSVP below**

SUMMARY:Grow Your Own Mushrooms Workshops [OFFSITE]
DESCRIPTION:Grow your own mushrooms! It is easier to grow mushrooms at home than you think. You can grow delicious and nutritious culinary and medicinal mushrooms in your own garden or home (in apartments\, on rooftops and patios\, too!) In the workshop we will cover how to inoculate stumps\, logs\, wood chips\, and burlap sacks while improving your garden ecology. In this interactive class you will learn the types of outdoor mushrooms that we can easily grow in our area\, the conditions required and the tools you will need. The class will also cover the basics of mushroom science\, how fungi functions in nature and how to work with fungi to help restore our local ecologies. The best part is the hands-on experience of inoculating a mushroom log that you get to take home! \nWorkshops will be outside- rain or shine\, and will be a combination of theory and hands-on practice. Please wear comfortable shoes for walking and bring your own water. Whether you have a little patch of backyard or a huge property to work with\, the principles you learn in this class will help make your land more diverse\, productive\, and ecologically friendly than ever before. \nMichael Judd has worked with agro-ecological and whole-system designs throughout the Americas for over two decades\, focusing on applying permaculture and ecological design. His projects increase local food security and community health in both tropical and temperate growing regions. He is the founder of Ecologia Edible & Ecological Landscape Design\, Project Bona Fide\, an international nonprofit supporting agro-ecology research\, and co-founder of SilvoCulture\, a Maryland based nonprofit which is helping plant 1 million nut trees in the Mid-Atlantic region. He is also the author of Edible Landscaping with a Permaculture Twist\, and For the Love of PawPaws. \nMichael lives with his family on a permaculture homestead nestled along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Frederick\, Maryland. The Judds’ homestead consists of 25 acres of mixed woodlands\, food forests\, gardens\, and a nursery designed for experimentation and education.

SUMMARY:Harnessing the Sun: A Homeowners Guide to Solar
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, homeowners will learn about the current dependence on “dirty energy” sources like coal and natural gas\, and how transitioning to solar can reduce their carbon footprint. The course will break down electric bill charges to reveal potential savings solar can offer. Homeowners will explore various financing options for solar installation\, including cash purchases\, loans\, and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)\, and learn about available government incentives such as tax credits and rebates. The class will emphasize the importance of selecting reputable solar companies that offer robust warranties and reliable customer support to ensure long-term system performance and protection. \nHomeowners are encouraged to bring a copy of their electric bill. This will be a pressure-free environment where they can learn about solar energy fundamentals without the pressure of home visits or immediate decisions. The goal is to prioritize education and understanding\, allowing participants to explore how solar works at their own pace and ask questions freely. Unbiased information will be provided to equip homeowners with the knowledge needed to make informed choices about solar energy adoption on their own terms.

To find out more check out their website: https://www.helpsy.com/ \nThe goal of this event is to keep worn textiles out of the landfill and support more mindful reuse. If you have clothing in good\, wearable condition and would like it to go directly into the hands of someone in need\, please consider donating to the Frederick Rescue Mission. A convenient drop-off bin is located behind Starbucks in the 7th Street parking lot. \nDrop off your textiles at either Common Market Co-op location and help us make an impact in our community. \n**Click here to review items we accept**
