DESCRIPTION:Together we’ll explore topics such as beginner birding\, external anatomy of birds\, how to observe birds\, and the importance of field marks. We’ll also discuss the use of optics like binoculars and scopes\, field guides\, and popular birding apps. Bird conservation issues – such as protecting birds and preserving habitat – will be presented and we’ll learn about local and statewide birding and advocacy organizations. \nMike Spurrier has been birding for approximately 35 years. He is currently serving as the president of the Frederick Bird Club and volunteers at the Audrey Carroll Audubon Sanctuary owned and operated by the Audubon Society of Central Maryland. Mike is certified in permaculture design through Oregon State University\, holds a bachelor’s degree in sustainability from Goddard College\, is currently completing a master’s degree in social innovation and sustainability\, and recently completed the Maryland Master Naturalist Program.

Food forests\, mushrooms\, swale gardens\, living willow structures\, hügelkultur beds\, herb spirals\, kiwi arbors\, pawpaw groves… and a circular strawbale home.  Tastings included. Lead by author and edible landscape designer Michael Judd at Long Creek Homestead. \n \nWhether you have a little patch of backyard or a huge property to work with\, the principles you learn in this tour will help make your land more diverse\, productive\, and ecologically friendly than ever before. Please wear good walking shoes\, dress for the weather\, and bring some water! \n \nMichael Judd has worked with agro-ecological and whole-system designs throughout the Americas for over two decades\, focusing on applying permaculture and ecological design. His projects increase local food security and community health in both tropical and temperate growing regions. He is the founder of Ecologia Edible & Ecological Landscape Design\, Project Bona Fide\, an international nonprofit supporting agro-ecology research\, and co-founder of SilvoCulture\, a Maryland based nonprofit which is helping plant 1 million nut trees in the Mid-Atlantic region. He is also the author of Edible Landscaping with a Permaculture Twist\, and For the Love of PawPaws. \nMichael lives with his family on a permaculture homestead nestled along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Frederick\, Maryland.
