SUMMARY:Grow Your Own Gourmet Mushrooms Workshop! [Offsite]
DESCRIPTION:Grow your own mushrooms! It is easier to grow mushrooms at home than you think. You can grow delicious and nutritious culinary and medicinal mushrooms in your own garden or home (in apartments\, on rooftops and patios\, too!) In the workshop we will cover how to inoculate stumps\, logs\, wood chips\, and burlap sacks while improving your garden ecology. In this interactive class you will learn the types of outdoor mushrooms that we can easily grow in our area\, the conditions required and the tools you will need. The class will also cover the basics of mushroom science\, how fungi functions in nature and how to work with fungi to help restore our local ecologies. The best part is the hands-on experience of inoculating a mushroom log that you get to take home! \nWorkshops will be outside- rain or shine\, and will be a combination of theory and hands-on practice. Please wear comfortable shoes for walking and bring your own water. Whether you have a little patch of backyard or a huge property to work with\, the principles you learn in this class will help make your land more diverse\, productive\, and ecologically friendly than ever before. \nMichael Judd has worked with agro-ecological and whole-system designs throughout the Americas for over two decades\, focusing on applying permaculture and ecological design. His projects increase local food security and community health in both tropical and temperate growing regions. He is the founder of Ecologia Edible & Ecological Landscape Design\, Project Bona Fide\, an international nonprofit supporting agro-ecology research\, and co-founder of SilvoCulture\, a Maryland based nonprofit which is helping plant 1 million nut trees in the Mid-Atlantic region. He is also the author of Edible Landscaping with a Permaculture Twist\, and For the Love of PawPaws. \nMichael lives with his family on a permaculture homestead nestled along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Frederick\, Maryland. The Judds’ homestead consists of 25 acres of mixed woodlands\, food forests\, gardens\, and a nursery designed for experimentation and education. \nIf you are in need of financial assistance to attend this class please reach out to ownerservices@commonmarket.coop

SUMMARY:Composting 101! [FREE\, RSVP]
DESCRIPTION:The Compositing 101 class will explore all aspects of backyard or home composting. Together we will explore what is necessary to start and successfully complete the decomposition of organic material such as food waste\, leaves\, ashes\, grass clippings\, garden waste\, paper products\, and cardboard. We’ll learn about a few beneficial insects and how to attract them to your compost bin. We’ll also look at different models of backyard bins and discuss how to screen and use finished compost. \nMike Spurrier has been composting in backyard bins for approximately 40 years. He has built many of his own bins and he is now producing low-cost compost bins made from pallet lumber. Mike is certified in permaculture design through Oregon State University\, holds a bachelor’s degree in sustainability from Goddard College\, is currently completing a master’s degree in social innovation and sustainability\, and recently completed the Maryland Master Naturalist Program.

SUMMARY:Building with Pallet Lumber Demo
DESCRIPTION:This course will explore various aspects of building with pallet lumber. We will discuss pallet lumber codes\, learn to identify pallet lumber that is stamped with HT for heat-treated in addition to how to collect free pallet lumber and easier ways to disassemble pallets. In this guided demonstration we will explore three (3) different projects that can be built with pallet lumber: compost bins\, mud kitchens (play kitchens for children)\, and bee hotels – nest boxes for pollinators! \nBy the end of this demonstration you will walk away with your very own bee hotel and all of the knowledge to start these pallet projects at home! Owners can enter win a custom-built Mud Kitchen\, generously donated by Mike Spurrier. \nMike Spurrier has been composting in backyard bins for approximately 40 years. He has built many of his own bins and he is now producing low-cost compost bins made from pallet lumber. He has also built outdoor furniture\, mud kitchens\, and bee hotels with discarded pallet lumber that he collected. Mike is certified in permaculture design through Oregon State University\, holds a bachelor’s degree in sustainability from Goddard College\, is currently completing a master’s degree in social innovation and sustainability\, and recently completed the Maryland Master Naturalist Program. \n**This will be an outdoor demo at our 85 location during the last half of our Plant-A-Palooza Event.** For more info on this event click here —> https://www.commonmarket.coop/classes-events/plant-a-palooza/
